Angry Anna

"Corrupt politicians don’t stand a chance against Angry Anna, a new social game that’s captured India’s social conscience. The game has earned over 200,000 playthroughs at about 3,000 every half hour since it hit the web two days ago (on Aug 24th, 2011). True to its name, this game is a small Angry Birds clone that contains four levels and features popular anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare as an Angry Bird, along with Baba Ramdev and Kiran Bedi. The baddies, or the green pigs, are implied to be the following political figures: Manmohan Singh, Suresh Kalmadi, P. Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal.

Promoted solely from Facebook ‘Likes’ and word-of-mouth via Twitter, Geek Mentors Studios plans to eventually release the game for the iPhone and iPad.”

Family of Heroes

Family of Heroes is an online role-playing training game designed to (1) help families of returning veterans learn essential skills to manage common challenges in adjusting to post-deployment life and (2) connect more veterans experiencing post-deployment stress with VA services.

The game was developed in collaboration with the Veterans Affairs of NY/NJ and included input from over 100 family members and veterans. Released in November 2011, the game has been made freely available through licensing agreements with federal and state agencies to the families of over 1.4 million veterans living in New York, New Jersey, Arizona, and Virginia.

A randomized, controlled study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Games for Health: Research, Development, and Clinical Applications in October 2011, found that Family of Heroes is an effective tool to engage families to motivate veterans who exhibit signs of post-deployment stress to seek help at the VA (82% of family members approached their veteran to discuss their concern after completing the training).

Family of Heroes was developed using Kognito’s proprietary Human Interaction Game Engine™, which is based on research in social cognition, neuroscience, and motivational interviewing. Kognito is a NYC-based developer of role-play training games in the areas of health and behavioral health.”

FIBBER: A Game About Political Deception

"Framed within the context of changes to financing political ads and exponential growth in social media and online gaming, Fibber explores the question – how can we design games that increase self-reflection on one’s susceptibility to deception in an effort to heighten fact-checking around political messaging? Beyond an attempt to internalize facts or advocate for fact-checking, Fibber attempts to both use in-game decisions to prompt players to reflect on their own bias in how they perceive “the truth” while also crowdsourcing the most “uncaught” deceptive statements made by presidential candidates so they can be shared via Twitter with the broader community."

Giant Tank

"Giant Tank uses the language of games – action and simulation – to produce an anti-war message.  The tank is an abstraction of the brutal machine of war, the soldier a hopeless, frightened individual on the losing end of a battle of unequal force. Giant Tank questions many aspects of warfare and society. How does the value of human life change in warfare? Why do people follow orders even when they understand them to be incorrect or the situation to be hopeless? How conscious are we of these facts in games?

On the Ground Reporter: Darfur

When no one else is available to get on-the-ground reports from Darfur, you’re the person they call. Explore various villages and campsites to understand the people, explore the history and culture, and investigate the source of the hostilities in Darfur.

Created by Butch & Sundance Media, a cross media collective in Amsterdam, On the Ground Reporter Darfur is the first game in the “On the Ground Reporter” series (A Dutch-language only Afghanistan version has recently been released). This game was funded in part by Free Press Unlimited, an international organization that focuses on strengthening the capacity of local media professionals and NCDO, a Dutch advisory center for citizenship and international cooperation.

By creating a game that uses real “on the ground” footage and a narrative built on a point and click adventure game, players gain a first hand look at some of the root causes of hostilities in Darfur. And by exploring different areas in each level, players are invited to interact with locals and discover the history of West Sudan.  The information they uncover could turn into a rich and compelling news story. The game challenges players to make judgment calls based on their data gathering but also to put their lives on the line to find out critical details.”

Play the News

“Play the News” is a web-based platform to bring interactive gaming elements to the online news media industry, and current event based classroom.  Impact Games has created an engine to drive “Interactive News” mini games and community features that change news consumption from passive reading to active engagement.  This ability to create a more compelling online news experience presents an opportunity to increase engagement metrics on many dimensions.  The Platform is composed of three major components: a web based publishing tool, the interactive game modules, and a community gaming and commenting structure.  While still a relatively short and casual experience the games allow for an experience that affects a deeper understanding of issues beyond the headlines.  Building on the internationally acclaimed PeaceMaker interface the games integrate broader contextual background information, multiple perspectives, and allow users to role-play critical players in the news.

The games are unique and easy for users to share and embed (like a youtube video).  The platform’s publishing tools allow quick, easy, and economical repackaging of existing content into an interactive layer in order to address breaking issues in real-time. The community profile and gaming elements promote tracking stories over time, broader content consumption, and engage users in the building of their own social political profile in relation to current events.  ImpactGames created content on a near daily basis from April to October 2008 in a “newsroom 2.0” format.  Through this period the company was able to track usage statistics that validated the engagement and value proposition.”

The ReDistricting Game

"The Redistricting Game is designed to educate, engage, and empower citizens around the issue of political redistricting. Currently, the political system in most states allows the state legislators themselves to draw the lines. This system is subject to a wide range of abuses and manipulations that encourage incumbents to draw districts which protect their seats rather than risk an open contest.

By exploring how the system works, as well as how open it is to abuse, The Redistricting Game allows players to experience the realities of one of the most important (yet least understood) aspects of our political system. The game provides a basic introduction to the redistricting system, allows players to explore the ways in which abuses can undermine the system, and provides info about reform initiatives – including a playable version of the Tanner Reform bill to demonstrate the ways that the system might be made more consistent with tenets of good governance. Beyond playing the game, the web site for The Redistricting Game provides a wealth of information about redistricting in every state as well as providing hands-on opportunities for civic engagement and political action.

The developers of the game coordinated efforts with leading redistricting reform groups including FairVote.org, League of Women Voters, and the Campaign Legal Center.”
